From Teenage Sweetheart to Legendary Press Agent

These images are a Twitter-Bio of Al's journey at Motown which began with getting Mike Powers' "Teenage Sweetheart" record played for the first and probably only time on the radio through his subsequently becoming Motown's legendary press agent representing the label and its vast array of talent.

"The Detroit Sound" and "The Sound of Young America" were slogans created by  Abrams to help Motown and Gordy sell a crossover music genre to the world.  These two historic slogans have identified and branded Motown.

Abrams would state, "Part of my job as Motown's press officer was to find the "politically" correct words and branding to promote and convey our music and artists during segregation without highlighting that we were a Black-owned company and music label.

In the words of Scottish journalist Stuart Cosgrove in his highly acclaimed 2015 book, Detroit 67: The Year That Changed Soul, Al was "Motown's maddeningly innovative Jewish publicist."

You can learn more about these images in the pages of Al's book, "Hype & Soul: Behind the Scenes at Motown."
